Car Seat Safety

April 27, 2006

Car Seat Safety---

The Kansas legislature has passed a new law regarding child seat belt safety.

*Infants to age 1 year AND 20 pounds must be in a rear-facing car seat.  This helps to protect them from head and cervical spine injury.

*Age 1 to 4 years and 20-40 pounds, use a forward facing child safety seat with a harness.

*Age 4 to 8 years and 40 to 80 pounds must be in a booster seat.  Adult seat belts do not usually fit these children.  The shoulder belt needs to be flat against the chest and collarbone.  Never let your child put the shoulder belt behind their back or under the arm.  This can result in serious injury.

*New Law:  The child must be in a booster seat until they are 80 pounds and over 4 ft. 9 in. tall.
